During a hot and humid Twin Cities summer, your air conditioner keeps your home cool. But did you know that without an indoor coil, the air conditioner would be completely useless? You see, an air conditioner doesn’t blow cold air into the home. Instead, it chills refrigerant, and pumps the chilled fluid inside to the indoor coil. The fan motor in the furnace pulls air from the home, and forces it through the coil. The refrigerant absorbs heat energy, and that’s the cooling process in a nutshell.
The box that contains the coil is called an evaporator coil. It is typically mounted on top of the furnace. A challenge with evaporator coils is the buildup of mold and bacteria that can take place. You see, as heat energy is moved from the air to the refrigerant, water condensates on the coil. Basic science right? But this damp, dark interior is a breeding ground for mold. If mold grows on the coil, efficiency is lost and the risk of indoor air pollution rises. A UV lamp will kill both surface and airborne mold and bacteria.
